Spectrum Corporate Resources Research
Advisory Approach
Spectrum Corporate Resources is a unique M&A advisory firm that operates as a network of professional intermediaries and valuation experts rather than a traditional investment bank. Founded and led for over two decades by Jack R. Sanders (1951-2025), the firm's distinguishing characteristic is its deep data expertise through BIZCOMPS®, the transaction database Sanders authored and which has become one of the most authoritative sources for small and mid-sized business valuations in North America.
The firm's thesis is that successful business transactions require both data-driven valuation expertise and hands-on intermediary services. By combining the BIZCOMPS database of over 17,655 verified transactions totaling $4.8 billion with a network of affiliated brokers, appraisers, and M&A professionals, Spectrum offers clients market intelligence alongside traditional deal execution services.
Sector Focus
Spectrum Corporate Resources focuses primarily on Main Street and lower middle market businesses—privately held companies with enterprise values typically under $10 million. The firm and its affiliates have particular expertise across several sectors:
- Manufacturing and Distribution: Discrete manufacturing, contract manufacturing, and wholesale distribution operations
- Business Services: B2B service providers, professional services firms, and outsourced operational services
- Consumer Services: Restaurants, sports bars, and retail establishments
- Healthcare Services: Physician practices, healthcare facilities, and medical service providers
- Construction and Engineering: Trade contractors, engineering firms, and construction-related businesses
- Automotive: Automobile dealerships and auto-related businesses (a specialty of affiliate Lance Schmidt)
- Entertainment and Media: Entertainment venues, media properties, and recreational businesses
The firm's affiliate model allows deep expertise across these diverse sectors, with each affiliate bringing specialization in specific industries. For example, Lance Schmidt has extensive experience with automobile dealerships, while Maria Caudle has worked across manufacturing, distribution, healthcare, entertainment, and construction sectors.
Deal Track Record
Spectrum Corporate Resources' approach to deal tracking is fundamentally different from traditional investment banks. Rather than publicizing individual transactions, the firm's contribution to the M&A landscape is the BIZCOMPS database, which contains over 17,655 verified transactions from across the United States and Canada, with approximately 1,200 to 1,400 new transactions added annually. These transactions total over $4.8 billion in aggregate value.
BIZCOMPS has become a cornerstone resource for business valuations throughout North America, providing detailed financial information on real-world transactions that removes marketplace uncertainty. The database is used by business brokers, appraisers, attorneys, CPAs, and business owners to determine fair market value for privately held companies.
While the firm does not publicly list individual deals in a traditional tombstone format, the collective transaction data in BIZCOMPS represents one of the most comprehensive datasets on Main Street and lower middle market business sales in existence.
Process & Fee Structure
Spectrum Corporate Resources operates through an affiliate network model. Clients work directly with Spectrum-affiliated intermediaries who provide:
- Business valuation services using BIZCOMPS data
- Buy-side and sell-side representation for business sales
- Strategic planning for ownership transitions
- Expert witness testimony and litigation support
- Equipment appraisal services
The firm's process emphasizes data-driven valuation alongside relationship-based deal execution. Affiliates use BIZCOMPS transaction data to establish realistic pricing expectations, then leverage their networks to find qualified buyers or acquisition targets.
Specific fee structures are not publicly disclosed and are likely negotiated on a case-by-case basis with individual affiliates. However, based on industry standards for Main Street business brokers, typical structures may include retainer fees plus success fees contingent on transaction completion.
Buyer Network
Through its BIZCOMPS database and affiliate network, Spectrum Corporate Resources has visibility into thousands of completed transactions and the buyers who participated in them. The firm's affiliates maintain relationships with:
- Individual buyers and high-net-worth individuals
- Strategic buyers looking for add-on acquisitions
- Private equity firms focused on the lower middle market
- Family offices seeking investment opportunities
- Corporate acquirers in specific industries
The aggregate transaction data in BIZCOMPS provides unique insight into buyer behavior, pricing multiples, and transaction structures across industries and market conditions.
Competitive Positioning
Spectrum Corporate Resources differentiates from other M&A advisors through:
- Data Leadership: The BIZCOMPS database is an industry standard, with over 25,000 transactions accumulated since its inception and 17,655+ in the current online version
- Affiliate Model: Rather than employing a traditional team of bankers, Spectrum sponsors a network of independent intermediaries, allowing broader geographic coverage and industry specialization
- Main Street Focus: While many M&A firms target the lower middle market ($10M-$250M), Spectrum and its affiliates serve smaller Main Street businesses typically under $10M in enterprise value
- Valuation Expertise: The combination of transaction data and certified valuation analysts (multiple team members hold CVA, CBA, and other credentials) provides rigorous valuation support
- Longitudinal Data: With transactions spanning multiple decades and economic cycles, BIZCOMPS offers insight into how market conditions affect business valuations
Not a Fit If
Spectrum Corporate Resources is typically not a fit for:
- Companies with enterprise values above $10-15 million (the firm focuses on Main Street and lower middle market)
- Public companies or subsidiaries of public corporations
- Companies seeking traditional investment banking services like debt placement, equity raises, or IPO advisory
- Cross-border transactions requiring international regulatory expertise
- Highly complex deal structures requiring specialized legal or tax structuring
